Olive’s Corner

Olive’s Corner – August 2017

The fences have come down at the revamped Olive’s Corner.

Olive's Corner, August 2017The small park at the corner of Liardet, Bay and Lalor Streets was opened in March 2002 in honour of the late Senator Olive Zakharov.  It was recently refurbished by the City of Port Phillip completing a large grassed area and adding more seating.

Olive lived in Swallow Street and was heavily involved in the local Port community. In particular, when it looked like the older houses in Swallow Street would be demolished to make way for a new housing estate Olive rallied support against the proposal and painted “NOT FOR SALE” on the roof of her house in large letters.

Tragically, Olive was struck by a car crossing St Kilda Road on 12 February 1995 and never regained consciousness dying on 6 March.

We think that Olive would have liked to sit and chat, watching the world go by at one of Port’s busiest corners form the little green oasis that bears her name.
