The Standard newspaper reports on 8 April 1916 that the Mutual Help Lodge IOGT received a letter from Mr W Codling the superintendent of the juvenile branch of the lodge in which he states that he is CQMS of the 23rd Northumberland Fusiliers, Tyneside Scottish Brigade and is in France ready to advance to the front line.
