Biography - Caton Family

Caton, Fred

Fred died in Prahran in 1982.

The Caton family are descended from John Christopher Keaton and Mary Lions of South Africa whose son, John Christopher Caton married Anne Williams and whose first chilld was born in Sandridge 26th June 1857. Mary Lions was a black woman from either St Helena or Cape Town. The family memory is that John and Anne were married at Holy Trinity Sandridge in 1857 in a tent.

The family home of William Edward and Maria was at 95 Ross Street, and Fred first operated a butchers shop at 95 Ross Street. In 1954 he opened the additional shop at 203 Ross Street. He later moved to a butcher's shop in Graham Street. In the 1960s Fred had a heart attack and the management of the shop 203 Ross Street went to Ted Jackson, his nephew, who worked for him in that shop.
