Biography - Crichton Family

Crichton, James Peter

James Peter Crichton is well remembered as a prominent citizen of Port Melbourne. Details of his contribution to the City of Port Melbourne are well recorded in Uren and Turnbull A History of Port Melbourne. He was very influential in the football club and the cricket club. The publications by Terry Keenan on these clubs, available from the Historical and Preservation Society, give more information.

He was born about 1871 in Fitzroy and was married in 1895 to Elizabeth Branton Portbury, who was born 1872 in Port Melbourne and died 1958 in Melbourne.

Edith Myrtle Chrichton born 1897 Port Melbourne; died 1974 Oakleigh; married John Richard Ernest White, 1923 he died Box Hill 1971.Children: Euphemia Betty died south Melbourne 1925; Goerge White born 8.6.1926; Elizabeth Mary White born April 1921 Toorak.
Euphemia Eva Crichton born Port Melbourne 1899 died Bentleigh 1984.Married Patrick Dunn 1930; child: Robert David Dunn born 1931 Toorak
Arthur Alex Crichton born Port 1901
Percy William Crichton born Port 1903

J.P. Crichton served on Port Melbourne Council for 51 years from 1905 and was Mayor five times.
