Biography - Jennings Family

Jennings, Ernest
132 Farrell Street 1920-1929 Property

Ernest was the grandson of John Jennings who was born in Demerara, BG, South America about 1820. (could be British Guyana).

John migrated to Australia some time before 1845 when a son John was born to him and his wife Catherine nee Naylor who were married in 1841 in Victoria. Some of the records from their family Bible are transcribed in the PMH&PS records.

Ernest's father was Francis Naylor Jennings, the youngest of their seven children, born in Melbourne in 1853, 18th June at one o'clock AM. Baptised Monday 16th January 1854 by Mr Budd (English minister) and afterwards formally received into the Church at St James, on the Sabbath 29th January by Rev. Mr. Vance (G.O.)

Ernest and Martha nee McMaster were married 19 January 1874. They had eight children of whom this Ernest was fifth, born 19th March 1893 in Port Melbourne.

His occupations are given first as groom and later as carrier. He married Gladys Harrison 18 September 1915. Only one child of Ernest and Gladys is in the records, Jackson King Jennings born 21 January 1920, about the time they moved into the Farrell Street house. Jackson King was baptised at Holy Trinity 18th December 1920.

There is some evidence of a family connection to Nugents of 178 Ross Street. Property

Jennings, Ernest
132 Farrell Street 1939-1952 Property

Since the other Ernest Jennings would be 98 in 1952 it seems likely that this is a different man. He is described as a poulterer by Sands and McDougall. Like Ernest Jennings snr he owns the house. Rate records show "Ernest Jennings" as the owner continuously from 1920 to 1950s, when the then occupants, Mathesons, become joint owners. This confirms that we are seeing two Ernest Jennings.
