Biography - Monkhouse Family

Monkhouse, Ralph Philpot

Ralph Philpot was born about 1865. He married Mary Ellen Edwards on 22nd March 1888. Mary had been born in Sandridge 18th May 1869. Ralph's occupation is given as pocketbook maker.

Their children were:

Ralph, born in Broadford 8th December 1888
John Thomas born 21 March 1890, died 1953
David born in Broadford 29th October 1891
Susanna born 6th January 1893 in Port Melbourne
Mary born in Port Melbourne 10th October 1895, Mary was one of the first woman to be employed in a bank as a clerk when the State Savings Bank employed women during the First World War. (see photo)

The property remained in Ralph's ownership for more than twenty years after he moved, first to Graham Street and then to Bay Street.

Monkhouse, John R.
160 Farrell Street 1893 - 1904 and 1909 Property

His parents were Ralph Monkhouse and Susanna Philpot. John was born in 1864. His occupation was coppersmith.

Although he moved elsewhere in Port Melbourne and then onto Collingwood, he continued to own the house until 1920.
