He was born in Ballarat in 1865 and in 1877 married Christina Watson, born 1856 in St Kilda. Christina died in 1935 in Port Melbourne.James was a labourer and also a bicycle manufacturer who lived at one time in 234 Bay Street.
They had three children:
Emerald born about 1881, somewhere in New South Wales who married William Sinclair on 31st December 1900. William was born in Sandridge in 1873. They had one daughter, Doris born in 1903 in Port Melbourne and she married in 1924 when her surname is given as O'Rourke
Violet Evelyn who married Otto Frederick Christian Faalkenhagen 28th February 1908. He had been born in Kiel, Germany about 1878
Annie Victoria born 1884 in Emerald who married William John Scott 1 March 1913.
