Biography - Salmon Family

Salmon, Philip Melville
75 Evans Street 1889-1894 Property

Philip Salmon was born about 1850 in South Shields, England. He married Emma Jane Ladner in 1871. Emma had been born in Footscray about 1847.

They had seven children:

Bernice Florence born Sandridge 1871
Eleonor Burn born 1972 Sandridge
Emma Grace born Port Melbourne 1874
Philip Melville born Sandridge 1876
Ernest Easton born 1880 in Sandridge
Edward Vincent born 1882 in Footscray
Benjamin Percy born 1884 in Footscray.

Phillip died at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in 1909 and Emma in 1926.

Philip Melville Salmon was a very important citizen of Port Melbourne for many years. When he lived in 73 Evans Street he was the Member of the Legislative Assembly. As a councillor of the municipality, he was one of those who strongly supported the change of name from Sandridge to Port Melbourne in 1884.

In some ways he was seen as a political radical, he certainly knew how to win the support of the working class vote in Port Melbourne in 1892, when he was elected to Parliament by defeating the sitting member, F.T. Derham.
