Biography - Trewavis Family

Although there are 16 people named Trewavis on the PMH&PS Port People data base, there is no clear evidence to link any of them to 6 houses in this precinct where members of the Trewavis family lived.

Trewavis, John
229 Bridge Street 1900-1932 Property

John Trewavis is described in Sands and McDougall as an engine driver. He was the owner/occupier of this house.

Trewavis, Charles W.
131 Farrell Street 1900-1917 Property

Trewavis, Edwin snr
182 Ross Street 1888-1893 Property

Probably Edwin Robertson who married Annie Walton in 1979. Although Sands and McDougall describes him as a contractor, when a son Edwin Leonard was born to Annie and Edwin Robertson, his father's address was given as at sea. They also had a daughter, Lily born in Daylesford in 1880.

Trewavis, Jane
10 Derham Street 1900 Property
182 Ross Street 1904-1910 Property

The coincidence of Jane occupying the same house as Edwin suggests she might have been his widow except that elsewhere his wife's name is given as Annie. No Jane Trewavis is listed in PMH&PS Port People data base.

Trewavis, John snr
180 Ross Street 1888-1893 Property

There are three John Trewavis in the PMH&PS Port People data base but very little information on any of them.

There was some connection with the Graham Street Methodist Church by some members of the family.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries one of the leading Port Melbourne estate agencies was 'Trewavis'. Their office was in Bridge Street near the corner of Bay Street.
