Field is anoher marginal inclusion depending on his correct place of birth. He enlisted as a 23-year-old shipping clerk, his address Hawthorn, with his mother in Canterbury as next of kin. Witnesses suggested he was buried with three others in a shell hole, but his remains were never recovered; no known grave. The circular nominated Canterbury as the late serviceman’s closest place of association.

“Field was killed in the fourth Ypres stunt. We went over the first thing in the morning at dawn and he was wounded with the shrapnel in the body and killed instantly. I did not see him hit, but saw his body afterwards when i helped to put him and three others into a shell hole and left them. we did not cover them at all. He was fairly tall, straight black hair and dark complexion. He was quite young, about 22. I think he was a Victorian. He left Australia with the 7th Bn. to which he then belonged. (Pte. R.
