Abbreviations – WWI Centenary Project

The following abbreviations are used throughout this site

AIF – Australian Imperial Force

ANA – Australian Natives Association

AWM – Australian War Memorial

DAS – Died at Sea

DEMOB – Demobilised

DISC – Discharged (either prior to embarkation or prior to returning to Australia, usually in England)

DCM – Distinguished Conduct Medal

DNE – Did not Embark (ie Did not serve overseas)

DOD – Died of Disease

DOW – Died of Wounds

DSO – Distinguished Service Order

EMB – Embarked (from Australia)

ENL – Enlisted

HMAT – His Majesty’s Australian Transport

KIA – Killed in Action

MBE – Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire

MC – Military Cross

MM – Military Medal

MSM – Meritorious Service Medal

NAA – National Archives of Australia

NCU – Not Called Up For Duty

NOK – Next of Kin

NSW – New South Wales

OBE – Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire

POB – Place of Birth

POW – Prisoner of War

QLD – Queensland

RAN – Royal Australian Navy

RTA – Returned to Australia (usually the date the person embarked from the war zone to return to Australia)

SA – South Australia

TAS – Tasmania

VIC – Victoria

WA – Western Australia
