In November 1919, Sydney applied to Port Melbourne Council for the combined position of Dog Registration Officer, Meter Reader and Assistant Collector for Electric Supply. Over 100 applications were received*.
Another returned soldier, Sydney Ryan Carns was the successful applicant.

“Lieutenant Sydney H. Holmes is returning from the war on the Maine, which is expected to reach Port Melbourne about September 5. He is the son of Mrs. Holmes, 132 Nott-street, enlisted in May, 1936, and left Australia in following. He fought in
France, and was recommended for a commission, which he obtained after the
prescribed period of study at Oxford”

Lieutenant Sydney Hercules Holmes was my 2nd great-granduncle.
His brother was my 2nd great-grandfather, Albert Edward “Bertie” Holmes, the father of my great-grandfather Kevin Stanley Holmes, who passed in Jan 1981 – he was married to my late -great-grandmother who passed away April 2022 at just shy of the age of 98 – Dorothy May Holmes, McKercher before marriage.
Kevin and Dorothy lived at 226 Stokes Stroke from the mid 1940s, my 2nd great-grandfather and my great-granduncles had previously lived at 226 Stokes, as well as 113 liardet St and Sydney as well as 132 Nott St.
