Private, 5 Infantry, died of wounds, 11 May, 1915, Egypt, aged 43?, commemorated Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Cairo, Egypt.

Wife: Mrs Lily Atkinson, born Port Melbourne, educated Princes Street SS. He enlisted in Sydney, initially showing a married sister in Newport as next of kin, later his wife in Bridge Road, Richmond. Circular returned by a married daughter in West Coburg showed his mother at 2 Retreat Place and the serviceman as the father-in-law of 2101, Frederick Augustus ATKINS, Brunswick, killed in action 31 August, 1918. Atkinson’s widow was shown at 2 Retreat Place, Port Melbourne. He claimed to be 37 on Attestation, but the circular suggests he may have been 43, the age quoted by the AWM Roll of Honour.

    Victorian registrations have his parents : John and Mary Ann ATKINSON (nee BANK), born Sandridge, 1870, making him probably a year or so older than shown on the AWM. Family shown in Brewster’s Lane around the time of his birth

      James Atkinson was one of 4 sons of John Atkinson [1839 UK- 1878 Pt Melb.] and his wife Mary Ann n. Banks-[1842 Dublin-1920 Melb.] . His father John Atkinson was a member of MUIOOF Loyal Sandridge Lodge No. 4953- James had 1 sister named Catherine Ann Atkinson who married James William Cameron [snr] 1889. His brothers were-Robert, William Thomas and John Atkinson all born in Pt Melb. Would like to know where they went to school.
