On 19 October 1917, Joe, as he was widely known, murdered his foster sister, Annie Samson. Annie was married to George Samson who was serving overseas at the time. She was well known in Port as a member of the Women’s Welcoming Committee (WWC) and Honorary Secretary on the local branch of the Political Labour Council.
Joe Budd was executed at Pentridge on 29 January 1918.
