    Boer War (1898-1902) service : One year and 96 days in South Africa during Boer War, initially 80 Trooper (later Lieutenant),1st Queensland Mounted Infantry, seconded to Transvaal Mounted & Foot Police 19.6.1900, 16.1.1901 discharged 23.1.1901. Later re-enlisted (as Joseph Alexander BURGE), 353, Private, 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, NOK in Lytton, Queensland, noted as left behind in hospital at Charlestown with enteric when 5 QIB returned to Australia
