Brian William Ellis
Herbert Ellis was my Great Grand Father’s brother, I would like to know story of his life, Brian Ellis.

From his war record we can determine that Herbert was 31 years old when he enlisted on 29 August 1914. He was a slater, married to Louisa living in Annandale, in Sydney. Prior to the war, he had served a two-year apprenticeship with Nelson & Paterson, possibly of South Melbourne and had spent 3½ years in the Victorian Cadets.
Herbert saw war action at Gallipoli and in France and left England on 22 July 1917 to return to Australia via the troopship ‘Nestor’. He had asthma and a weak ankle. He was discharged (medically unfit) on 25 October 1917 in the 2nd Military District (2nd MD). The 2nd MD covered most of NSW so Herbert was probably discharged in Sydney having sailed from Melbourne on board the troopship ‘Euripides’ on 27 September 1917.
Immediately after his discharge, Herbert was given a military pension of 15/- per fortnight. His wife Louisa was given 7/5 per fortnight and their children, Henry M and Irene Louisa received 5/- and 3/9 per fortnight respectively. The family were living at 23 Thorby Avenue, Leichhardt, NSW.
On 30 August 1928, Herbert submitted a Statutory Declaration requesting a duplicate copy of his discharge papers (and badge) since he had lost the originals. His address at the time was 24 Capel Street, West Melbourne, VIC.
The replacement papers show that Herbert was 5 ft 5 inches tall, had grey eyes, dark hair and dark complexion, weighed 140 lbs and had a chest measurement of 34/37 inches.
The final piece of information that can be gleamed from his war record is that Herbert died on 20 January 1951 and was a resident at Beechworth Mental Hospital.
