He enlisted at 33 years, a labourer with his mother in Abbotsford. Brothers 7259, Herbert and 3768, Percy David GABELL both born in Port Melbourne enlisted from the Abbotsford address. One other brother, Will and two married sisters

“Gabell was in B. Coy. and was No.2 on the Lewis Gun. I do not remember his number and did not actually see him killed, but I saw his dead body as St. Master’s Wood on the St, Quentin Road. Casualty happened about 6.30 a.m. on August 23, 1918 at which time he was on the Gun and shot through the head. I do not know place of burial, but refer to Pte, Fullerton, S.D., 5375, also killed August 23, 1918 about the same time., for he will know particulares of burial” (L/Cpl F.W. Jackson, 1770, B.
