Thomas stated his age as 19 years, 5 months when he enlisted in July 1915 but also received written permission from his parents to enlist which was unusual for a nineteen year old. In December 1920 he made a Statutory Declaration that he was in fact 17 years and 5 months old when he enlisted and wished to have his records amended.
