Merrick returned to Australia after the Bridging Team was disbanded and attempted to enlist with the A.I.F. on 18 April, 1916, his Attestation showing 7 months with the Bridging Team, but more importantly, 12 years with the Royal Navy before his time expired. Rather strangely and despite him volunteering a second time, he was was struck off strength as a Deserter from the 23rd Depot Battalion on 6th June.

Born Bristol, England, Henry James Merrick died in Prince Henry’s Hospital in 1936 at 55 years of age and was interred in Fawkner Cemetery.
