Morris was wounded at Gallipoli and after transferring to the Western Front was convicted twice of being Absent Without Leave, but in May, 1918 faced a Court Martial on more serious charges of assaulting and wilfully destroying the property of a local inhabitant. He was found guilty and sentenced to two years detention, After serving time in France and later England, he was returned to Australia, disembarking 18 July, 1919 and discharged, automatically forfeiting his rights to war medals.
