Further research by Ray Jelley has uncovered that James died in 1945, unmarried, and, at the time of his death living with his sister, Ivy Olive Mummery and his brother-in-law William Harris. His will named his sister as his beneficiary. He had been badly wounded during the battle for Villers-Bretonneux on 24 April 1918 serving with the 59th Battalion. He must have been one of the twenty casualties listed in the unit war diary on that day caused by the German artillery barrage. The war diary stated: ‘A considerable amount of enemy shelling was experienced up to this point which resulted in twenty casualties’. James’ wounds were such that he had his left leg amputated above the ankle and his right arm amputated at the middle humerus.
