Gunner, 10th Field Artillery Brigade, died of wounds 23 October, 1918, age 25, commemorated Vadencourt British Cemetery, Maissemy, France.

Parents: Alfred and Mrs Ann SHELL, born Meredith, educated Port Melbourne and South Melbourne SS. Enlisted as a 23 year-old engineer, his address as 174 Buckhurst Street, South Melbourne, but with his parents at 330 Esplanade East, Port Melbourne. The circular was returned from Port Melbourne and simply showed Melbourne as the late serviceman’s place of association. Four brothers, three married sisters.

    SHELL – Officially reported died of wounds on 23rd October, at the 5th Casualty Clearing Station, Gunner J Shell, loving son of Mrs A. Shell, Port Melbourne, and much loved brother of Albert, Mrs Linklater, Samuel, Mrs Charles, Mrs Lamond, Will and Joe, after two years’ service. Our hero
