Private, 38 Infantry, killed in action 26 August, 1918, France, aged 35, commemorated Suzanne Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

Wife: Mrs Sarah STURMAN, born Dunedin, New Zealand. He enlisted as a 34-year-old factory hand with wife at 17 Lalor Street. No circular returned. A Death Notice placed by several workmates reveals he was employed as a factory hand at Robert Harper & Co, Port Melbourne (starch manufacturers).

    “The abovenamed soldier was about 45 years of age, fair moustache, thick-set build. I saw 4 of my Co. sitting down beside a broken old house at Suzanne when a large enemy shell burst amongst them, killing Sturman and wounding the other three. Death was instantaneous. He was buried in the Cemetery at Suzanne. I placed a cross over his grave about a fortnight afterwards” (Pte. J.A. Rhodes, 4879, 38th Battn)
