Private, 3 Pioneer Battalion, killed in action 7 June, 1917, Belgium, aged 31, commemorated Strand Military Cemetery, Belgium.

Parents: Christian Jens (late) and Emma TOMHOLT; wife: Mrs Bernice TOMHOLT, born Port Melbourne, educated Nott Street SS. A 30-year-old gasfitter who enlisted with his wife shown in Coburg, later East Brunswick. She returned the circular from there with South Melbourne as her late husband’s principal place of association. What appears to be a brother, 4538, Sydney John TOMHOLT, married, nominated his wife in East St Kilda as next of kin. Two children, Keith and Thalia, brother of May (South Melbourne), Christian (Tooronga) and George (East St Kilda).

    “I saw him dead at Ploegsteert. He was caught by a shell and blown to pieces. He was buried at the dressing station. Ploegsteert Wood. I assisted to bury him and marked the grave with a cross bearing all his particulars” (Pte. T. Humphries, 220, 3rd Pioneers)
