Born Sandridge, 1880, circa 34 years on enlisting. Birth records show his parents William and Thursa Louisa, nee Portbury, but there are six other births registered for his mother (three either side of 1880) with the father shown as Hugh, listed as in Railway-place, Sandridge. William was shown at 352 Graham Street in May, 1930 when he applied for replacement discharge papers, the originals stolen during a break-in at the nearby Clare Castle Hotel some three years earlier
